Saving questions, answered

How much should I save each week?
It depends on your goal and how long you've got. Enter a target amount and date above and the planner works out the weekly, fortnightly and monthly amount to hit it. As a general rule, aiming for around 20% of your take-home toward savings is a solid target.
How do I save for a house deposit in NZ?
Work backwards: set your deposit target and the date you want to buy, and the planner tells you the weekly amount. KiwiSaver can also be used toward a first-home deposit, so factor that in alongside your own savings.
How big should my emergency fund be?
A common target is three months of essential expenses, kept somewhere safe and easy to reach. Even a $1,000 to $2,000 starter buffer stops an unexpected bill from becoming debt while you build toward the full amount.
Does the planner account for interest?
Yes. It can project compounding interest on your savings over the timeline, so you can see how much the bank does for you versus how much you need to contribute yourself.
