KeaBudget

Trust

Security & your data

Last updated: 2026-07-03

KeaBudgetis a money app, so trust is the whole thing. Here is exactly where your data lives, who can touch it, and the control you have over it. In plain English, and honest about what is and isn't in place yet.

Where your data lives

Your transactions are stored in a Postgres database hosted in Australasia (currently Sydney), encrypted at rest and in transit. Nothing is routed through US or EU data brokers. When an AWS region in New Zealand becomes generally available, we will evaluate moving to it.

We don't sell or advertise, ever

No ads, anywhere. We never sell, lease, share or barter your data, and we never analyse it for advertising. We collect the minimum needed to run the app: no tracking cookies, no cross-site tracking, no advertiser pixels.

The personal app is free, and the way we keep the lights on is optional paid add-ons (bank sync and a separate contractor tier), not your data.

Who else touches your data

We use a small number of trusted providers, each for one job, and list them openly in our privacy notice:

  • Clerk handles sign-in and holds your email and authentication tokens.
  • Neon hosts the encrypted Postgres database that stores your transactions.
  • Resend delivers account and welcome emails.

That is the full list. If it ever changes, this page and the privacy notice change with it.

Bank connections (when they arrive)

Automatic bank sync is not live yet. When it lands, it runs through Akahuand New Zealand's open-banking framework, and the connection is read-only by design: it can read your transactions to save you typing, and it cannot move money.

You will never hand your bank login to KeaBudget. Bank sync will be an optional paid add-on. Until it arrives (and after, if you prefer), CSV import and manual entry stay free forever, so you never have to connect a bank to use the app.

You're in control

It's your data. You can export everything and delete your account and its data from inside the app, at any time, no email required.

Built in the open

KeaBudget is an independent project built by a software engineer in Auckland, in public. We post what we ship in our updates log. Found something that looks off, or want more detail on how something works? Email hello@keabudget.co.nz. Responsible reports are always welcome.

This page describes our current setup in good faith and is not a contractual guarantee or a formal certification. For the full detail on data handling, see our privacy notice.
