Get a third of your donations back
The Tax year page now shows what you gave to charities, schools and churches each year, about a third you may get back from IRD, and which donations still need a receipt.
Donations of $5 or more to approved charities, churches and most schools earn a tax credit of a third. Plenty of people never claim it, and IRD accepts receipts up to four tax years back.
The Tax year page now has a donation card, built from your Charity / tithing and School donations categories:
- What you gave in the year, and about a third back.
- When you can claim: once the tax year ends on 31 March, in myIR.
- Which donations have no receipt yet, each with a link to attach one. Donation receipts are free to store for everyone.
- The other years you can still claim.
School fees, camps and activity costs don't count, and the credit can't be more than a third of your taxable income. It's an estimate: IRD's donation tax credit page has the full rules.
